Frequently Asked Questions for Overseas Chinese and International Students to Intern in Taiwan after Graduation
Q1: What should I do if the internship assignment letter is lost?

A1: You can ask the internship director or the department to issue an internship arrangement certificate as a supporting document for the relevant application.

Q2: When does the internship officially begin?
A2: According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education, internships cannot start before July 1 each year, and students must obtain approval from the Ministry of Education before they can start their internship.

Q3: If the internship has been approved by the Ministry of Education, do I still need to extend or change the purpose of residence on the Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)?
A3: Yes, even if approved by the Ministry of Education, you must apply to the National Immigration Agency to extend your ARC or change your purpose of residence after graduation. Otherwise, the purpose of residence on the ARC may not match your actual status, which will affect your legal residence and internship eligibility.

Q4: Do I need to apply for a work permit on my own?
A4: No. If you have obtained internship approval from the Ministry of Education, you do not need a separate work permit during the internship. However, if you are officially employed or work in another organization after the internship, your employer must apply for a work permit in accordance with the Employment Services Act before you can start working.

Q5
: If my student residence permit expires in June, do I need to extend it?
A5: Yes. You must apply to extend your residence permit or change your purpose of residence (for example, to internship or national examination preparation) at least 30 days before the expiration of your residence permit. Failure to do so may result in overstaying, which may affect your legal status and eligibility for internships or future employment.

Q6
: If my passport expires in June, will my internship be affected?
A6: Yes. A passport is a required document for residence permit renewal and other internship-related procedures. Please renew or extend your passport as early as possible to avoid delays and ensure that all relevant applications are processed smoothly.

Q7
: If my residence permit is valid until September, do I need to extend or change my purpose of residence?
A7: This depends on your current status: If you have not graduated yet, you can stay in Taiwan with a student residence permit and apply for a student work permit to participate in an internship. If you have already graduated, you must apply to the Immigration Bureau to extend your residence permit or change your purpose of residence even if your current residence permit is still valid. Continuing to stay in Taiwan with a student residence permit after graduation constitutes status incompatibility and may affect your legal right of residence.

Q8
: I am a Huaqiao student who is about to graduate, but I have not yet passed the first step of the medical license examination. What should I do?
A8: If you have not passed the national examination and cannot obtain a graduation certificate, you are neither a student in school nor a formal graduate. In this case, the school has no right to assist you in applying for an internship permit. It is recommended that you apply for a special internship permit extension from National Taiwan University on the grounds of "preparing for the exam." After passing the national examination and obtaining a graduation certificate, your internship agency will apply for a work permit for you according to regulations. At that time, you can legally start your internship.
